Located adjacent to the Amarillo Hot Springs, thirty kilometers from the town of Chaiten, Pumalin Explorer is centrally situated to offer replenishing thermal baths at the end of each day's activities. Our services includefly fishing excursions to Lago Yelcho and other nearby rivers, guided trekking through temperate rainforests, catarafting, horseback riding, ecology oriented photo safaris and Chaiten Volcano summit hikes. The Pumalin Explorer thermal spa is located in one of the most pristine regions of Patagonia, Chile surrounded by the spectacular private Nature Sanctuary of Pumalin Park, famous for its old growth Alerce trees and primeval evergreen Valdivian Temperate Rain Forest. From our riverside lodge our guests can journey by foot or by horseback riding up the Rio Michimahuida to visit two actively calving glaciers of immense beauty whose source is the snowfields of the dormant stratovolcano Michimahuida . Our premium accommodation is a spacious carpeted suite (6 x 7 meters) built directly over the banks of the enchanting Amarillo. The suite contains a king-sized bed, two twin-sized beds, a private bathroom, and direct access to a rock-lined thermal spa. Ideal for groups of 2-4 persons or families with a maximum of five. We also have two beautifully appointed cabins adjacent to our central lodge which can accommodate larger groups of 4-6 persons respectively.
We are open year-round. Even though many of our outdoor activities are curtailed during the winter, Pumalin Explorer makes for a great stop-over for those wishing a warm respite from the Patagonia rainy season.
Travel Directions:Pumalin Explorer is located just off the Carreterra Austral (Route 7) at the El Amarillo road junction, 30 kilometers southeast of the town of Chaiten, or 15 kilometers northwest of Puerto Cardenas on Lago Yelcho.
By Air: Chaiten can be accessed by air from Puerto Montt. Aerocord airlines flies between the El Paloma (Puerto Montt) and Santa Barbara airports (Chaiten) most days of the week. By Land: Pumalin Explorer can be accessed via the Argentine frontier through the Futaleufú or Palena border crossings. From Futaleufu travel along Rt 231 to Rt 235 to the Carreterra Austral ((Rt 7) and northward to Puerto Cardenas. Turn off at the Amarillo Junction (W-887), approximately 15 kilometers north of Puerto Cardenas.
If you are coming from Palena stay on Rt 231 to Puerto Ramierez, then follow the directions above.
From the town of La Junta, or points further south, stay on the Carreterra Austral (Rt 7) through Santa Lucia until the Amarillo Junction.
When you reserve a Pumalin Explorer five-day, six-night package, we include round trip air-travel from Puerto Montt to Chaitén in your trip price. This service is not included for shorter stays. For shorter stays we will happily arrange your ground travel from the Chaiten pier or the Santa Barbara airport to Pumalin Explorer.
Our Lodging: At the current time we have a beautifully furnished suite (42 sq.mts) that can accommodate a party of 2 fishermen or a group of 4 friends. We also have two beautifully appointed cabins adjacent to our central lodge which can accommodate larger groups of 4-6 persons respectively. Our maximum capacity is 14.
Our Cuisine: Our cuisine is regionallybased and includes fresh meats from the surrounding areas, organic vegetables from greenhouses operating in the town of Amarillo (Pumalin Park) as well as our own cheeses and honey which are produced by locals in the Michinmahuida River area. Our kitchen prepares picnic style box-lunches for our away excursions, like fly fishing and trekking, as well as breakfast and dinner at the lodge. Dinner includes regional and homemade wines.
Our Service: Our services are 100% personalized. We have a rock-lined thermal spa and currently operate a cataraft completely set-up forfly fishing. Our guides have considerable expertise and knowledge with respect to the nearby rivers and lakes in this part of Patagonia.
Our Location: Pumalin Explorer is located on 34 hectares adjacent to the Amarillo Hot Springs, 30 kms southeast of Chaiten along the Carreterra Austral (Rt7) in the tenth region of Chile. Because we are located just outside the southern entrance to Pumalin Park, we have oriented our activities around fly fishing, trekking, horseback riding and other outdoor pursuits. We operate throughout the entire Pumalin Park area with its beautiful rivers and lakes.
