The trailhead to the Michinmahuida Glacier begins at the southern end of Pumalin Park. From there the trail follows the banks of the meandering Amarillo River through Valdivian temperate rainforest where you will encounter a wide variety of exotic plant and animal species and enjoy spectacular views. One of the features of this ride is the numerous microclimates that must be traversed before reaching the moraine and talus fields of the glacier itself. The ride to the ice-fall is truly one of a kind, an experience you don’t want to miss.
Despite the widespread volcanic ash that has fallen in Amarillo zone, this excursion retains its beauty. The glacier has already recovered its pre-eruption pristine state and shows no sign of ash, making this ride a great option for this summer season.
In addition to the glacier ride there are three other day-long excursions available from the Pumalin Explorer lodge following the Amarillo, Michinmahuida and Crucero rivers. The ride along the Michinmamhuida Rivers enters the lands of Plano Fundo Toquihue, one of the original great estates in the region that were an integral part of the early settlement and history of Patagonia, Chile. There is also a ride that crosses the entire Andes Mountain range that ends up at the Argentina border, near the town of Futaleufu. This ride takes six days and traces the old homesteader’s route. It can only be scheduled during months with optimum weather, so contact us in advance. Read more about it below.
This is a six-day expedition, it includes a day stay at the Pumalin Explorer lodge at the Amarillo hot springs, four days of riding and camping, and one night at the Rio Grande Hostel in Futaleufu near the Argentine border. This ride is characterized by extremes of nature and beauty, with breathtaking views of the Turbio Chico Glacier.
The first part of the route follows the Michinmahuida river, crossing the Andes mountains through valleys and high plateaus to the Veraneda Pass and then onward to the Espolón valley.
