Trip 1: Chaitén Volcano summit trek.Hiking to the Chaiten Volcano crater.
Pumalin Explorer offers a rare opportunity to its guests, a trek to the crater of the active Chaiten Volcano which last erupted in May of 2008. The route up to the crater is a medium difficulty hike that will take approximately 3 hours to complete. Descending from the volcano is a very slow process, due to the loose ash and scree from the last eruption, in which we need to exercise due caution to prevent ankle sprains and falls. This all-day hike begins at Pumalin Explorer at 9:00 am and returns late in the afternoon for a replenishing therma bath at our lodge. If you do not have prior hiking or trekking experience you will be tired at the end of the day but will have an experience you will remember forever.
Trip 2: Horseback Riding to the Michinmahuida Glacier
The trailhead to the Michinmahuida Glacier begins at the southern end of Pumalin Park. From there the trail follows the banks of the meandering Amarillo River through Valdivian temperate rainforest where you will encounter a wide variety of exotic plant and animal species and enjoy spectacular views. One of the features of this ride is the numerous microclimates that must be traversed before reaching the moraine and talus fields of the glacier itself. The ride to the ice-fall is truly one of a kind, an experience you don’t want to miss. Read More >>

It is now once again open and accessible to the general public with trekking trails and facilities that are in perfect condition. Read More >>
This is a beautiful trek that traces the Yelcho Chico River (Little Yelcho River) which originates from the glacier that gave the river its name. The trek is made possible by a trail cut by the Chilean National Forest Service (CONAF). Along the route there are many rest stops and scenic look-outs. The trail ends about one kilometer from the ice-fall area of the glacier. To finish the hike we must walk along the talus and scree of the Yelcho Chico River. Because of the mud we recommend that our guests switch from hiking boots to sandals which we will pack along with us. CONAF is planning to finish the trail soon. Read More >>
